The Inspiration Behind Palais de Saba – As Told by Delphine Lebeau
When I was asked to create a fragrance called "Palais de Saba," I did not first think about walls, columns, or the gold that adorned ancient palaces.
Instead, I asked myself:
"What is the scent that remains in memory long after leaving a palace?"
I closed my eyes and imagined a royal palace at sunset.
The final rays of sunlight reflected across magnificent stone columns while luxurious silk fabrics drifted through grand corridors. Within the palace courtyards, the aroma of precious spices carried by distant caravans blended with the scent of finely crafted leather adorning royal chambers.
The journey began with saffron.
Not only because it is one of the world's most precious ingredients, but because it symbolizes wealth, rarity, and prestige—qualities long associated with royal courts and noble houses.
I then introduced red currant to bring brightness and vitality to the opening, like the first golden light touching palace walls.
At the heart of the fragrance, I wanted leather to appear in a different form.
Not dark or rugged, but refined and elegant, like luxurious Saffiano leather crafted for royalty.
A sophisticated leather accord surrounded by velvety osmanthus and radiant freesia, creating a composition where leather seems dressed in silk rather than armor.
For the base, I envisioned the final memory left behind after departing the palace.
The lingering impression that remains in the air.
Tonka bean and vanilla add warmth and sophistication, while oud introduces a regal oriental depth that reflects the rich heritage of Sheba. Symphonide contributes a modern musky aura, allowing the fragrance to remain vibrant and captivating on the skin for hours.
In the end, I realized I had not created a fragrance about a palace made of stone.
I had created a fragrance about the feeling a palace leaves behind:
Luxury without ostentation.
Power without noise.
Beauty that remains present long after its owner has departed.
And so, Palais de Saba was born...
